North Vietnam – NLF, NVA, VC Phu Yen Province High combat area – CIA (Central Intelligence Agency) report of 1971 reports that whilst inside supposed Allied Controlled area the Viet Cong ran a Prisoner of War Camp and re-education camp of captured Southern soldiers within forest located somewhere inside dense forest of Phu Yen Province. Censored with names are specifics of location, released 16th January 1971 reports notes that South Vietnamese Soldiers re-educated and sent home (in this case they would only be released to work with the VC) and Allied prisoners including Koreans and Australians were present and were on discovery of camp (Bright light units) were sent by truck to North Vietnam along the Ho Chi Minh Trail. Capital of Phu Yen Province is Tuy Hoa. Tuy Hoa, ( approx 100km north of Qui Nhon ) was an extremely active combat area throughout the Vietnam War – Supported by the US Special Forces detachment at Dak To, the City of Tuy Hoa, by 1965 warranted it’s own enforcement by US Military and over the coming years was to be come a full-blown air base homing the USAF’s 31st Tactical Fighter Wing. The first major US Military action took place here in January 1966 with Operation Van Buren. With the Allied forces under been constantly harassed by the VC’s 95th Regiment the US, with a brigade form the 101st Airborne in conjunction with the ARVN 47th Regiment and a Unit of Korean Special Forces conducted a search and destroy mission throughout the area surrounding Tuy Hoa. The Operation was offically called a success with 340 plus, enemy confirmed dead however in reality was halted due to heavy and growing US Casualties in the middle part of February. It ended on the 21st of February 1966. The 101st Airborne suffered 55 KIA’s and 221 Wounded in Action during the operation. During the Tet Offensive of 1968 it was again the Viect Cong / NAVA’s 95th regiment in conjunction with local Village Forces that attacked Tuy Hoa.
